The book is written for the middle school crowd and I would say it is appropriately written. As an adult I am often drawn to sci-fi and fiction writing, well, just because I am am. I enjoy it. This book reminded me of a cross between Artemis Fowl and the old show Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Anyway the book was well written for it’s audience although it was a bit dry for the first few chapters. As many books are – this one made you trudge through chapter one. I was able to read it over about 16 hours in the car. Once I was into it, it kept drawing me back. Kudos Brian.
The premise of the book is simple: Adopted, shunned kid becomes the hero of the day and of course someone he holds dear is a white hat mastermind. Isn’t it always that way. I have read many books written for this age group and it really is the same story as many, however the author did a great job at taking out all inexplicable magic you would normally see in something like Percy Jackson, and replacing it with explainable and ‘reachable’ science. Science you could in fact duplicate (or at least I think we are real close to doing today.) Although admittedly he got out of trouble way too easily for a middle-school kid – way too easy.
Probably the best part for me was getting to learn a little more about some historical figures from our country. Some great references in there for sure.
It was a fun read like I said and I hope to be given the chance to review the rest of the series when it comes out. I do hope it ends up in many local libraries.
